‘TJimmy McGovern’s tale of atonement and redemption in a modern prison is characteristically grim but deeply engaging and bristling with flawless performances. The claustrophobic focus that either rigidly sticks to Sean Bean’s hapless teacher or Steven Graham’s terse prison guard is a double-edged sword – in the sense that it gives it a wildly engaging clarity but whenever we veer away from either of their predicaments the show loses focus and the other prisoners can come across as rough sketches. Which isn’t to downplay the phenomenal secondary turns from a who’s-who of underrated British talent like Aneurin Barnard or Jack McMullen. British drama has a habit of either being so dark it comes across as mawkish or so exaggerated it comes across as silly – Time isn’t perfect but it strikes the balance between pitch black and patches of light really well and oddly enough it did seem to flash by.
